After the pandemic, the world is working quickly to get back to normal in order to make up for the time it lost. In particular, the tourism industry has been one of the sectors to benefit from the post-pandemic environment. According to the data that was provided by AugustaFreePress.com, the year-over-year growth in the number of app downloads for travel and navigation purposes was an impressive 18 percent during the second quarter of 2022. The number of downloads of the most popular travel and navigation apps during this time period reached 137 million overall.
137 million downloads combined from both app stores during the second quarter
According to the data that was provided by SensorTower, a combined total of 137 million copies of the best travel apps were downloaded from the App Store and the Play Store during the most recent quarter. This marked the third quarter in a row in which there was an increase in the total number of downloads.
The graph demonstrates that during the year 2020, when COVID-19 was wreaking havoc around the world, downloads reached an all-time low. However, the travel industry in the United States began to show signs of improvement in 2021. The cumulative number of app downloads experienced consistent growth throughout the first three quarters of the current year. The number of downloads increased steadily from 70 million to 123 million between the fourth quarter of 2020 and the third quarter of 2021, representing a growth of 76 percent. The escalating curve, on the other hand, reversed its direction in the fourth quarter, when downloads fell to 106 million. This decline was not unexpected given that numbers typically fall during the fourth quarter.
The number of downloads increased dramatically during the first three months of 2022, reaching 115 million. This number represents an increase of 33.7 percent from 2021 when compared to the previous year's total. At approximately the same time, the Omicron variant started to become a cause for concern; however, it does not appear that it had a significant effect on the numbers.
Even into the second quarter of 2022, there has been an increase in the number of downloads. The number of downloads reached 137 million in the second quarter of the year. This past quarter was, historically speaking, the best quarter for travel and navigation apps, as the number of downloads even surpassed that of Pre-covid. The number of downloads saw a 19 percent increase from the previous quarter. The growth rate from the previous year fell from 33.7 percent in the first quarter to 18 percent in the second quarter.
The third quarter is traditionally the busiest time of year for the tourism industry in the United States, and this is reflected in the number of downloads of travel apps. According to historical data, the third quarter of each year is when downloads of travel apps reach their highest point. As a result, one should anticipate that the current upward trend in the number of downloads will continue into the third quarter.
